Philby was in fact a "Knight Of Malta," his loyalty was to the Vatican. All his schemes and deceptions were to further the aims of the Vatican not the Soviets, or MI5, or the UK. Philby`s father, who is also mentioned in the article was also a "Knight of Malta." He too was a loyal Vatican servant.
